As Lucy Siegle, our favourite eco-warrior journalist, declares this summer the "Summer of Plastic", we thought it was a perfect time to write about why we do what we do here at Wild Glitter.
You could be forgiven for wondering why a little bit of plastic glitter was a problem, after all it's only glitter, and as one festival-goer remarked recently "it's not going to kill the planet." (I had just given her an earful for covering me in the plastic glitter she was shaking about all over the crowd). Yes, a little bit of glitter is a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of the plastic that's floating around out there, but if you zoom out from your personal use to hundreds of thousands of people covering themselves at hundreds of festivals over the summer you'll start to see the bigger picture, and it may be sparkly, but it ain't pretty.
With recent studies showing that 16 out of 17 brands of sea salt around the world contain plastic, and that the average seafood-eater will consume 11,000 pieces of plastic a year, it's clear that we have a big problem on our hands (and plates). We are what we eat, the old adage goes, and who wants to be a toxic piece of plastic? Not me!
It's true there are much bigger offenders out there when it comes to plastic pollutants, but while the majority of plastic waste starts off big and breaks down, glitter starts off small and stays that way. After a heavy weekend of glitter use, it snakes its way down our drains, past our water filtration systems and shimmies its way into our oceans, ready to be consumed by unsuspecting aquatic creatures.
There are so many ways that you can reduce your plastic consumption, but choosing biodegradable glitter is a great start. Wild Glitter biodegradable glitter is made from 100% compostable wood pulp, meaning that instead of your weekend of sparkliness leaving a footprint for thousands of years, you can rest assured that with the help of the friendly microbes in soil and seawater it will vanish without a trace.
We offer biodegradable glitter in chunky or fine, and as 3ml or 10ml single pots or rainbow multipacks. Click the image below to shop now!
